The superstar duo are arguably the two greatest players of their generation, but once again failed to claim the biggest trophy in the game.

While Ronaldo's Portugal were knocked out by Uruguay in Russia, Messi's Argentina were stopped by eventual winners France.

Both superstars have now taken part in three different World Cups, with the Argentine coming closest to lifting the famous Jules Rimet trophy but missing out to Germany in the final in 2014.

Messi and Ronaldo are not the only superstars who never won a World Cup. In fact, there are quite a few others, including Italy's Paolo Maldini. The defender took part in four different World Cups, namely in 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2002, but his best finish was second place in 1994, when the Azzurri lost the final on penalties to Brazil.

Unfortunately, he retired from the national team in 2002, four years before Italy lifted their fourth World Cup trophy.

Another football great who never lifted the trophy despite coming very close is former Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. He, too, lost a final against Brazil, when Ronaldo Nazario's brace in 2002 destroyed his dreams of winning the tournament.

I think Ronaldo and Messi played 4 world cups respectively..if my calculations are correct editor starting from 2006,2010,2014 & 2018 that is 4 world cups not 3.
