Alonso To Retire From International Football
According to Spanish newspaper, Marca, Xabi Alonso will retire from international football after the World Cup.
According to the Marca, the 33-year-old has thought about retirement for some time now, and wants to concentrate on his career at Real Madrid.
Alonso, who is on duty with Spain at the World Cup, recently signed a new deal at the Santiago Bernabeu that will see him remain at the club until 2016.
The news comes days after La Roja were knocked out of the World Cup in the group stages, following a 2-0 loss to Chile and 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Netherlands.
However, Alonso has enjoyed a successful career with the national side since making his debut in 2003 in a 4-0 win over Ecuador, winning two European championships in 2008 and 2012, while also lifting the World Cup trophy in 2010, while earning 113 caps and scoring 16 goals in the process.
Alonso's last game for Spain, if he plays, will be against Australia on Monday.
