World Cup 2014

Xabi Hints End Of Spanish Reign

Spain midfielder, Xabi Alonso, has indicated that his team's reign atop world football is over after a 2-0 defeat to Chile eliminated them from Group B on Wednesday.

After winning the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 and 2012 European Championships, Spain has failed to record even a single point in Brazil thus far, losing 5-1 to Netherlands in the opening match before falling to Chile.

"We didn't know how to maintain our hunger or that conviction needed to win a tournament," Alonso said after the match, according to the BBC.

"The joy and success we've experienced is over."

After the Netherlands defeat, the 32-year-old fended off claims that he and his teammates were past their primes, but his tone was different on Wednesday night.

"Normally cycles come to an end after a defeat," he added.

"Maybe it would be best to think about making changes."

Spain coach, Vicente Del Bosque, corroborated Alonso's sentiments, adding that there will surely be fallout after the two defeats.

"It's true that when such things happen during a World Cup or a tournament such things have consequences," he said.

"We have time to analyse that and it is not the right time now. There will be time to think and reflect what we are going to do.

"I think this team is good but we have to take a decision about what is good for Spanish football and that applies to myself as well."
