Qarabag 1-2 AS Roma

Kostas Manolas put AS Roma in front after just seven minutes in front of a vocal Azerbejan crowd.

Soon after Edin Dzeko doubled the Romans’ lead with a neat finish that found the roof of the net.

South Africa’s Dino Ndlovu set up team mate Pedro Henrique who scored Qarabags’ first ever UEFA Champions league goal but it was not enough as Roma ran off 2-1 winners on the night.

FC Basel 5-0 Benfica

Michael Lang put the Swiss side FC Basel ahead after two minutes and got his side off to the perfect start.

Dimitri Oberlin put further distance between his team and the visitors after a well taken finish to double Basel’s lead.

Basel were running away with it when Ricky Van Wolfswinkel converted a penalty to make it 3-0.

Things went from bad to worse for Benfica as two quick goals by Oberlin and Blas Riveros sealed a 5-0 thrashing of the Portuguese giants.

Anderlecht 0-3 Celtic

It took a while to get things going in Greece until Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic found the back of the net through Leigh Griffiths after 35 minutes.

Celtic put early pressure on their hosts and it paid off as they forced an own goal from defender Sebastian Coates.

Scott Sinclair scored late to seal all an important victory for Celtic and a good confidence booster.

Juventus 2-0 Olympiacos

The Italian champions struggled to get going on the night after a disciplined performance from Olympiacos saw the scores even for the first 70 minutes.

Gonzalo Higuain managed to get a breakthrough shortly thereafter with a typical strikers’ finish to give Juventus a 1-0 lead.

Mario Mandzukic was on hand to double his side’s lead and secured all three points for the Italians.
