CR7 Equals Two Records But Man Utd Suffer Shock Loss

Manchester United endured horrid start to the UEFA Champions League following a shock loss to BSC Young Boys, despite Cristiano Ronaldo equalling two records on Tuesday night.

Result: Young Boys 2-1 Manchester United

Date: 14 September 2021

Venue: Stadion Wankdorf

Ronaldo, fresh off his two-goal showing in his first game since returning to the club against Newcastle on Saturday, started for United after to equal Iker Casillas' all-time Champions League appearance record of 177 matches

United took the lead in the 13th minute. Fernandes got the ball on the left wing and curled one with the outside of his foot behind the Young Boys defence to the back post for Ronaldo, who side-footed the ball first-time and it squirmed through the legs before creeping just over the goalline.

With that goal, Ronaldo equalled Lionel Messi's record of scoring against 36 different teams in the Champions League.

The Red Devils went down to ten men in the 35th minute for Aaron Wan-Bisakka's reckless challenge on Craig Martins, stamping on the midfielder's foot.

Soon after, the Swiss side came close to capitalising on being a man up when Christian Fassnacht slashed at the ball as it drifted across the box, firing just wide of the left-hand post.

Young Boys would take advantage of the extra man when they equalised in the 66th minute when Silvan Hefti's low cross from the right bounced up nicely for Nicolas Ngamaleu who toe-poked it in at the near post.

Young Boys were continuing to chase a lead and seeing most of the possession with United seemingly content to allow their opponents to play the ball in front of them.

Ngamaleu was looking for his second and after controlling a knock down went for the audacious left-footed volley with the outside of his foot but it was always curling away from David de Gea's right-hand post.

Soon after, Young Boys centre-back Sandro Lauper found himself on the edge of the box and launched a decent effort which was just heading over the bar but De Gea made extra sure by diverting it over.

Young Boys grabbed a dramatic winner in the fifth minute of added-on time. Jesse Lingard's poor attempt at a back pass went straight into the path of Jordan Siebatcheu, who made no mistake putting the ball past de Gea into his bottom right-hand corner.
