City End Group Stage Campaign With Defeat

UEFA Champions League

Result: Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 Manchester City

Date: 06 December 2017

Venue: Metalist Stadium

Manchester City ended their UEFA Champions League group stage campaign with defeat after losing 2-1 to Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday evening.

Pep Guardiola opted to rest a number first team regulars, as Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and Kyle Walker were named among the substitutes, while David Silva was left out completely.

The hosts started brightly in the early exchanges with Bernard causing a number of problems for the City defence.

In the 26th minute, Marlos embarked on a brilliant run before laying a pass to Barnard, who sent a strike into the top corner, 1-0.

Shakhtar had a lot of aggression in their play and doubled their lead in the 32nd minute through Ismaily, who beat Ederson to the ball and scored in an empty net.

Ismaily almost made it 3-0 in the 40th minute after being gifted space to turn and shoot on the edge of the box but his strike sailed over the bar.

The hosts pressurised Pep Guardiola's charges and Bernard nearly got his brace on the stroke of halftime,  but he missed the target by inches from close range.

The hosts continued to dominate after 10 minutes in the second half and City could not match their intensity and aggression.

Guardiola introduced Aguero in the 72nd minute with Fernandinho making way as he tried to turn the game around.

In the 81st minute, Gabriel Jesus did well to turn his marker inside the box and was unlucky to see his shot hit the post.

Yaya Toure showed his class with five minutes to go as he turned well on the edge of the box and curled a right-footed effort inches wide of the upright.

City were awarded a penalty in stoppage time that was converted by Aguero, but it was too little too late to save their perfect record.
