Real started without wing back Dani Carvajal, who sat out through suspension, as Nacho Fernandez assumed his role.

Unai Emery pulled off a surprise omission with captain Thiago Silva ousted for French youngster Presnel Kimpembe.

Ronaldo looked for a two-minute lead after running behind the defence, but he volleyed across the face of goal.

German international Toni Kroos came up with another attempt at goal, which was blocked away before it diverted for a corner kick.

The oil-rich club came to the party with their first shot at goal through Yuri Berchichi, who fired across the face of goal from the right side.

The Portuguese international got played through goal once more after bearing down on Alphonse Areola which the latter blocked away.

The French champions took the lead after Adrien Rabiot was found in unfamiliar territory to side-foot home after 34 minutes.

Karim Benzema looked to put one over his countryman after unleashing a shot from close range, which Areola parried into touch.

The Spanish outfit drew level on the stroke of half time after Ronaldo stepped up to thump away from the spot after Kroos was hacked down by Marco Verratti.

Following the resumption, Kylian Mbappe who was once targeted by Los Blancos looked to regain the lead after getting on goal from the right, but could only drew a fine save from Keylor Navas.

Uruguayan Edison Cavani made way for Thomas Meunier 25 minutes before the end, while Gareth Bale came on for Benzema.

With chances drying up towards the closing stages, Ronaldo completed his brace with a looping finish which ricochet off his thigh despite the best efforts of Areola, 2-1.

It was three minutes later on after Marcelo lashed home a half volley which bumped off the ground and into an empty net, 3-1.

The two sides clash again in the decisive return leg set for Paris in three weeks time, and PSG will fancy their chances with the away goal to boot.
