Result: Genk 1-4 Liverpool
Date: 23 October 2019
Venue: Luminus Arena
African superstars Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were among the goals as Liverpool thrashed Genk 4-1 in UEFA Champions League group stage action on Wednesday night.
Jurgen Klopp made five changes from the Reds' 1-1 draw with Manchester United over the weekend, as James Milner, Dejan Lovren, Naby Keita, Mohamed Salah and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain were handed starts.
Chamberlain repaid the faith from the onset as he gifted the visitors lead inside two minutes with a low strike from around 25-yards out that deflected into the bottom corner.
Salah was lively for the Reds for most of the opening stages of the first half, but the Egyptian squandered a big chance after 25 minutes when he steered a header wide from six-yards out after some good work by Dejan Lovren.
Genk, meanwhile, managed to cause a couple problems in the latter stages of the half as Maehle and Ito sent some inviting crosses into the box but Samatta was unable to profit.
It took Liverpool 10 minutes to find their second goal in the second half as Roberto Firmino teed up Chamberlain, who found the top corner with a superb strike with the outside of his boot.
There was a bit of a concern for the visitors after the hour mark as Andy Robertson made way for Joe Gomez, but it remains to be seen if it was forced or tactical.
However, the European champions eventually bagged a third goal on 77 minutes as the side's famous front three combined, with Firmino and Salah combining to set up Sadio Mane, who lobbed the on-rushing Gaetan Coucke.
There was enough time for a fourth goal as Salah bagged a goal to go with his assist with a fine individual effort to round off an emphatic victory.
Genk did give their supporters something to shout about as Stephen Odey bagged a consolation with a neat finish from close range as the encounter ended 4-1 to the visitors.
