Result: Galatasaray 0-1 Real Madrid
Date: 22 October 2019
Venue: Türk Telekom Stadium
Toni Kroos netted on his 100th UEFA Champions League appearance as Real Madrid defeated Galatasaray on Tuesday evening.
Los Blancos manager Zinedine Zidane rang the changes from their shock loss to Mallorca over the weekend, with the likes of Toni Kroos, Eden Hazard and Raphael Varane restored to the line-up.
The sides were creating chances early in the game but it was the visitors who drew first blood in the 18th minute courtesy of Kroos, who side-footed Hazard's cut-backinto the bottom corner with the help of a slight deflection.
The Spanish giants took control of the game after going ahead, causing problems to the Galatasaray defence but they were not clinical in front of goal.
The Turkish outfit were improving in the latter phase of the first stanza, being able to deny Madrid chances but the visitors went to the break with a 1-0 advantage.
Zidane's troops were on the front foot in the early stages of the second stanza and were only denied the second goal by the brilliant goalkeeping of Fernando Muslera. However, Hazard came the closest to making it 2-0 for the visitors in the 65th minute after skipping past Muslera but he struck the crossbar with the net gaping.
Muslera was having a great game in front of goal, keeping Galatasaray in the match and Los Blancos kept their threat upfront with 11 minutes remaining by bringing on Vinicius Junior in place of Hazard, while James Rodriguez came on for Federico Valverde.
Steven Nzonzi almost restored parit with six minutes remaining with a header inside the six-yard box that sailed over the bar as Los Blancos held on for their first win in the group to move up to second, while Galatasaray remain at the bottom with only a point.
