Man Utd Suffer Defeat At Basel

UEFA Champions League

Result: FC Basel 1-0 Manchester United

Date: 22 November 2017

Venue: St Jakob-Park

Manchester United had to wait to secure their spot in the Last 16 of the UEFA Champions League after suffering a 1-0 loss to FC Basel on Wednesday evening.

The Swiss side started the first 10 minutes well as they pressed United in the middle of the pitch.

Romelu Lukaku had a fantastic opportunity to open the scoring in the 23rd minute after being sent through on goal by a well-weighted pass from Paul Pogba but he field to convert from close range.

United had the stranglehold of the game after half-an-hour as they knocked the ball around with more confidence.

Marouane Fellaini hit the post in the 42nd minute with a header following a great run and cross from Anthony Martial from the left wing.

Martial could have broken the deadlock on the stroke of halftime but Tomas Vaclik did well to deny the Frenchman who had a run in into the box to nick in a shot.

The half ended goalless with United comfortably on top of the game lacking only in goals.

Serey Die almost gifted Raphael Wicky's troops the lead in the 53rd minute after the visitors failed to clear the cross with a rocket of a shot but it flew wide of the goals.

The hosts started to carve out chances after 67 minutes on counter-attacks after United withdrew Pogba for Nemanja Matic.

Mourinho introduced Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 74th minute in place of Martial.

United regained their rhythm with five minutes to go but were seemingly content with sitting back than going forward in numbers.

The Red Devils were punished in the 89th minute by Michael Lang who toe-poked home from close range at the far post to secure the win for the home side.
