Dinamo Zagreb Beat 10-Man Arsenal
UEFA Champions League - Group F
Result: Zagreb 2-1 Arsenal
Date: 16 September 2015
Venue: Stadio Georgios Karaiskaki
Arsenal had a disappointing trip to Zagreb on Wednesday night as they lost 2-1 in their UEFA Champions League opener.
The Gunners came agonisingly close to opening the scoring in the 18th minute when Olivier Giroud found the hosts' woodwork. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain set up the chance with a cross in from the right but his team-mate couldn't find the finish.
Disaster struck for the visitors in the 24th minute as Oxlade-Chamberlain put the ball in the back of his own net. A strike from Picaric was saved by Ospina but the rebound hit the Arsenal man and sneaked into the goal.
Matters worsened for Arsene Wenger's charges as they were reduced to 10 men five minutes before the break. Giroud was already on a yellow card when he lunged into a tackle, earning his second booking and his marching orders.
Zagreb ensured they would collect all three points when they extended their lead to two goals in the 58th minute. A ball into the danger area from a set-piece found Junior Fernandes who headed home with aplomb.
Arsenal made the last 10 minutes of the clash a bit more interesting thanks to Theo Walcott who pulled a goal back in the 79th minute. The Englishman was fed down the left channel by Santi Cazorla and chipped the ball over the onrushing keeper to find the back of the net.
However, it wasn't enough to change the outcome of the game which saw the hosts claim all the spoils.
