Leicester Off To Dream Start In Europe
UEFA Champions League
Result: Club Brugge 0-3 Leicester City
Date: 14 September 2016
Venue: Jan Breydelstadion
Leicester City turned heads in their maiden UEFA Champions League game by thumping Club Brugge 3-0 on Wednesday night.
The Foxes couldn't have asked for a better start to their European campaign. In the first five minutes the visitors opened their account as Marc Albrighton pounced on a loose ball after a failed clearance and bundled it home.
The travelers were two ahead in the 29th minute. Riyad Mahrez had a rather quiet game up until the timely strike when he bent a superb strike into the top corner of the goal, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
Club Brugge struggled throughout the first half and it was the visitors who looked the more confident outfit despite playing in their first Champions League tie.
On the stroke of half-time it went from bad to worse for the hosts as Leicester were awarded a penalty. Ludovic Butelle took Jamie Vardy out in the box, and Mahrez stepped up to slot the spot-kick for a 3-0 lead.
Brugge had a rare chance shortly thereafter when Izquierdo got into the area and fired a shot at goal, only to see it rattle the far post.
The home team found some better rhythm as the second half wore on and created a few more chances, but Leicester were able to comfortably clinch victory in the end.
