Bayern Grind Out Victory Against Benfica

UEFA Champions League
Result: Bayern Munich 1-0 Benfica
Date: 5 April 2016
Venue: Allianz Arena
A single strike was enough to see Bayern Munich through to victory in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash with Benfica.
Die Roten were off to the perfect start as they took the lead in only the second minute of the clash. Bernat crossed for Arturo Vidal and he headed home unmarked.
The hosts put together a promising attack in the 20th minute when Franck Ribery sent the ball in for Thiago who faked a shot and passed it on for Thomas Muller, but his volley was brilliantly saved by Ederson.
Benfica responded and countered with pace to catch Bayern off guard. Gaitain led the charge down the wing and crossed into the box where Phillip Lahm stopped it with a slide. There was a big penalty appeal from the visitors, but they were not obliged.
Pep Guardiola's men were put under pressure just shy of the hour mark as Jonas got the better of Alaba with a turn of pace, but the angle of his shot was difficult and Manuel Neuer made the save.
A mistake from Ribery then allowed Benfica a chance to attack but Lahm did well to stop a low cross. The ball was still alive in the box and Jonas pounced but his shot was blocked.
In the last 10 minutes Benfica's goalkeeper, Ederson, made a great stop to keep out Ribery and keep the Portuguese side within one goal heading into the second leg.
