Atletico Stun Juve On Ronaldo's Return To Madrid
UEFA Champions League
Result: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Juventus
Date: 20 February
Venue: Wanda Metropolitano Stadium
Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus' UEFA Champions League quarter-final hopes hang in the balance after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the round of 16 first-leg.
Diego Costa made a return to the Atletico line-up after missing the weekend's LaLiga encounter, while Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic led the attack for the visitors.
There was a good tempo the encounter, with the visitors going close to scoring through Ronaldo and Leonardo Bonucci inside the opening 15 minutes.
Atletico thought they were awarded a penalty after 26 minutes when Costa went down under the challenge De Scigilio. The referee had initially pointed to the spot, but the decision was overturned by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
The encounter swung from end-to-end in the remainder of the first half, but neither side could carve out another clear-cut opening.
Atletico came out firing in the second half and they were unlucky not to have gone ahead after 53 minutes when Antoine Griezmann's lob was tipped onto the crossbar by Szczesny.
Diego Simeone rang the changes for the final 30 minutes, as Alvaro Morata, Thomas Lemar and Angel Correa were all introduced as Atletico went all out.
The changes looked to have paid off when Morata nodded home on 70 minutes, however the Spaniard's strike was ruled for a foul on Chiellini after the referee consulted with VAR.
Atletico were not to be denied eight minutes later when the ball dropped kindly for Jose Gimenez, who rifled home from six-yards out.
The hosts then doubled their lead on 83 minutes when captain Diego Godin showed his attacking prowess with a delightful finish from a tight angle.
In the end, Atletico were able to see out the remaining stages of the second half and will now take a healthy lead to Turin for the second leg.
