Benfica Take Top Spot Over Atletico

UEFA Champions League
Result: Atletico 1-2 Benfica
Date: 30 September 2015
Venue: Estadio Vicente Calderón
Benfica took control of Group C with a 2-1 win at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The away side threatened early when Guedes drew out the goalkeeper before chipping it over him towards the gaping goalmouth. However, Filipe Luis covered Oblak and cleared off the line.
However, it was the hosts who broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute. Juanfran's cross found Antoine Griezmann who played a deft pass into the path of Angel Correa, giving the latter the chance to fire home from close range.
The scores were level once more in the 36th minute as Benfica found an equaliser out of nothing. Godin cleared Semedo's cross towards the back post where Gaitan collected it unmarked and directed his shot past Oblak.
Six minutes into the second half, the Portuguese outfit were in the lead for the first time. Gaitan powered forward, beating Godin before crossing for Goncalo Guedes who provided a classy finish from a tight angle.
Atletico came close once more when Griezmann whipped in a superb corner kick for Godin to nod goalwards from close range, but the effort went just wide of the post.
