Atletico Madrid secured their place in the Champions League quarterfinals on penalties as they edged out PSV 8-7 after a goalless draw.
The Rojiblancos started a bit slowly but forced a big save from Zoet in the 15th minute when a ball over the top from Juanfran found Koke who picked out Antoine Griezmann but the Frenchman was denied from close range.
Shortly before the break Atletico turned up the heat as Griezmann first had his shot blocked before Saul's rebound was played away deftly by Bruma.
PSV broke just shy of the hour mark as Propper attacked down the left before picking out Guardado. He in turn layed it up for Locadia whose strike beat the goalkeeper but crashed into the woodwork. The rebound fell for De Jong but his header was cleared off the line.
Atletico missed a good chance shortly thereafter. Luis cut onto his right foot on the edge of the box and unleashed a shot that Zoet parried high in the air. Carrasco arrived to meet the falling ball but his volley was terribly struck.
Fernando Torres came off the bench and almost scored in stunning style as he directed a deft chip shot over Zoet and towards the far top corner, but it was slightly overhit.
The former Liverpool and Chelsea forward threatened again in the 86th minute as he found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He smashed a shot at the near post, and Zoet did just enough to palm it onto the post with a great reactionary save.
The game went into extra time and then penalties as neither side were able to break down their opponent's defence.
In the end it was Atletico who came out on top thanks to Luciano Narsingh who hit his penalty onto the woodwork, giving Juanfran the chance to finish for an 8-7 penalty victory.
