Gunners Shocked By Olympiakos

UEFA Champions League

Result:  Arsenal 2-3 Olympiakos

Date:    29 September 2015

Venue: Emirates Stadium

Olympiakos shocked Arsenal with a 3-2 beating at the Emirates Stadium in a UEFA Champions League clash on Tuesday evening.

It was the visitors who had a better start, and the first chance of the game fell to Pajtim Kasami in the 8th minute, but the shot was lacking navigation. Arsenal responded almost straight away as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came very close to opening the score a few moments later,  dragging his effort just wide.

The hosts began taking control of the encounter after the ten-minute mark, but the visitors were proving to be a resilient bunch as they kept them from creating any real chance on goal.

It was Olympiakos’s Konstantinos Fortounis who came close in the 22nd minute, before Felipe Pardo capped a solid period for the visitors with a clinical finish into the bottom corner to give them a 1-0 advantage, no more than ten minutes later.

Their celebrations were cut short when Theo Walcott latched onto an Alexis Sanchez through ball to level matters, only two minutes later. Both sides were looking good and it was difficult to predict which side would get the next goal.

David Ospina ended up putting the ball into his own net five minutes from the break, giving Olymiakos a 2-1 half-time lead.

The Greeks continued where they left off as Pajtim Kasami came close to extending their lead after the restart, but his shot was comfortably saved.

Arsenal then added numbers into their attacks in search of the equalizer, and after a couple of half-chances, Sanchez produced the goods in the 64th minute, levelling matters at 2-2. Arsene Wenger’s men were hardly back in the game when Alfred Finnbogason produced a superb strike to regain the lead for the visiting side only a minute later.

Both sides upped the tempo, but the two defences stood firm and chances were seemingly becoming more and more difficult to come by. The Gunners were desperately searching for a levelling goal with the clock running down, and Per Mertesacker came close against the run of time but his shot was well saved in the bottom corner to secure the 3-2 victory for Olympiakos.
