UEFA Champions League
Round of 16, 1st leg
Full Time: Shakhtar Donetsk 0-0 Bayern Munich
Date: 17 February 2015
Venue: L’viv Arena
A ten man Bayern Munich were frustrated as the German team were held to a 0-0 draw by Shakhtar Donetsk in a UEFA Champions League, Round of 16, 1st leg match at the L’viv Arena on Tuesday night.
Bayern started positively and came close to opening the scoring in the second minute when Bastian Schweinsteiger met a chipped cross from Arjen Robben, but his volley from the edge of the box went just wide of the target.
In the 11th minute Robben was at the heart of the Bayern attack again as he drove to the edge of the box before playing Thomas Mueller in behind the defence, but he skewed his shot across the face of goal from an acute angle on the left.
Shakhtar were virtually non-existent in the opening half and their only real attempt on goal came from a set-piece in the 25th minute, but Yaroslav Rakytskiy saw his shot comfortably saved by Manuel Neuer.
Five minutes later some swift interplay by Franck Ribery and Mueller resulted in the later finding some space just inside the box, but he shot wide under pressure from numerous defenders.
Bayern controlled the remainder of the half, but struggled to break down the Shakhtar defence as the half ended 0-0.
The second half continued in the same fashion, but Bayern’s finishing continued to let them down.
One such example was in the 63rd minute when Ribery met a Juan Bernat cross with a strong 16-yard volley, but his effort went narrowly wide.
Two minutes later Bayern suffered a bit of a set-back when Xabi Alonso was sent for an early shower after receiving his second yellow card in his 100th Champions League game.
Shakhtar, though, could not take advantage of the man extra as Bayern still bossed the game, but the theme of the night was the German side’s wasted possession.
Neither side could find a goal as the match ended 0-0. The return leg of this Champions League Round of 16 match is on 11 March 2015 in Germany.
