Bayern Munich moved into the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League after playing to a 2-2 draw in the second leg of their quarterfinal match against Benfica at the Estádio da Luz on Wednesday night.
The result combined with Bayern’s 1-0 win in the first leg saw the German side progress into the last four of the European cup competition 3-2 on aggregate.
The home side applied the pressure early on and were rewarded for their efforts just before the half hour mark when Raul Jimenez headed a lofted left-wing cross from Eliseu beyond the Bayern keeper, 1-0 (1-1 on aggregate).
The German side, though, hit back ten minutes later when Arturo Vidal fired the ball into the top left corner from 24-yards out in the 38th minute, 1-1 (2-1 on aggregate).
Bayern scored their second goal of the night seven minutes into the second half when a corner-kick was headed back into the danger area by Javi Martinez to see Thomas Muller on the end of it as he tapped home from close range, 2-1 (3-2 on aggregate).
Benfica tried to find their way back into the game and gave themselves a fighting chance in the 76th minute when a superb 24-yard free-kick from Anderson Talisca found the back of the net to make it 2-2 on the night (3-2 on aggregate).
That set-up a cage final 15 minutes, but the Bayern defence held firm to move into the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League.
