European football's governing body announced the finalists for the four positional awards on Thursday.
The winners – along with the UEFA Men's Player of the Year and UEFA Women's Player of the Year – will be announced during the UEFA Champions League group stage draw in Nyon, Switzerland, on 1 October.
Three finalists per position were selected by UEFA's jury, which "comprised the coaches of the 32 clubs in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League group stage, together with 55 journalists selected by the European Sports Media (ESM) group, one from every UEFA member association. Coaches were not allowed to vote for players from their own teams.
"Jury members chose their top three players per position, with the first receiving five points, the second three and the third one. The three players who got the most points in each category made up the final shortlist."
Bayern Munich, the 2019/20 UCL winners, dominate the positional award shortlists, with seven of their stars among the nominees, while runners-up Paris Saint-Germain have three players in the running, and Atletico Madrid and Manchester City have one nominee each.
There was no space on this year's shortlist for Ronaldo and Messi, with the former finishing in only eighth spot among the forwards while the latter ended up in joint-fifth.

Last year, Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk, Frenkie de Jong and Messi won the positional awards, while Van Dijk was also named the UEFA Men's Player of the Year. The nominees for the latter award this time around are yet to be announced.
