UEFA Champions League Qualifier
Result: Liverpool 4-2 Hoffenheim (Liverpool advanced 6-3 on aggregate)
Date: 23 August 2017
Liverpool progressed to the UEFA Champions League group stages, after defeating Hoffenheim 6-3 on aggregate.
It was the Reds who got off to the best start as Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane both squandered early chances to extend their lead in the encounter.
Mane managed to make amends for his miss as he set up Emre Can with a beauty of a back heel and the German calmly finished to give his side a 1 – 0 lead on the night.
Salah was at hand to double his side’s lead as he reacted quickest from a rebound to slot his shot past Oli Baumann in the Hoffenheim goal in the 21st minute.
Three minutes later, a beautiful move by Liverpool saw Roberto Firminho set up Can who blasted his shot into an empty net, 3-0.
The visitors were not posing much of an offensive threat but did manage to pull one back through Mark Uth who ensured that the first half ended at 3 – 1.
The home side were not letting up despite their dominance as captain Jordan Henderson pressed high up the pitch and won the ball before unselfishly setting up Firminho who passed the ball into the back of the net to extend his team’s lead to 4 – 1 on 63 minutes.
The visitors refused to go down without a fight and pulled another goal back through a well placed header by Sandro Wagner who reduced the deficit to two goals with just 10 minutes remaining.
4 – 2 (6 – 3 aggregate) was how it ended at Anfield as Jurgen Klopp and his men booked their place in the UEFA Champions League group stages.
FC Copenhagen 2-1 Qarabag (Qarabag advance on away goals rule - 2-2 on aggregate)
