Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a hat-trick as Real Madrid thumped Shakhtar Donetsk 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday evening.
Rafael Benitez's men dictated the play for most of the opening exchanges, although they failed to create any chances.
The hosts should went ahead in the 15th minute when Karim Benzema was played through on goal by Ronaldo, the Frenchman then rounded the goalkeeper, however he fired over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.
However, Benzema did redeem himself in the 30th minute when Shakhtar goalkeeper, Pyatov, dropped Isco's cross, which allowed the Frenchman to poke home from close range.
Los Blancos were dealt a blow two minutes later when Gareth Bale had to be substitute due to injury.
Shakhtar's task was made tougher shortly after the break when Taras Stepanenko was given his marching orders, after picking up his second yellow card of the game.
Real then doubled their lead in the 55th minute when Ronaldo converted a penalty, after the Portuguese was brought down by Darijo Srna.
The home side were handed another penalty in the 63rd minute when Márcio Azevedo was adjudged to have handled the ball and Ronaldo stepped to clinch his second goal of the game.
Los Blancos managed to add a fourth goal in the 81st minute when Ronaldo tapped home from close range to complete his hat-trick, after Marcelo's effort had been blocked.
Benitez's men managed to see out the rest of the second half to begin their group campaign with three points.
