Manchester United secured a narrow 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow thanks to Wayne Rooney's second half strike.
United got off to the brighter start and Rooney nearly opened the scoring inside the first five minutes but his' left-footed volley sailed wide of the upright.
Jesse Lingard nearly handed the hosts the lead in the ninth minute, as the youngster collected a pass from Rooney, before seeing his effort saved by Roman Akinfeev.
United continued to push for an opening goal and Lingard squandered good opening in the 32nd minute when he blazed over the crossbar from 12-yards out.
Despite the home side's domination, both sides went into the break with the score level at 0-0.
Louis Van Gaal's side should have taken the lead shortly after the halftime break but Marcos Rojo managed to head wide from six-yards out.
Van Gaal decided to change things after the hour-mark and introduced Maroune Fellaini, much to the frustration of the Old Trafford.
Wayne Rooney's struggles continued in the 72nd minute, as the United struggled to convert from point-blank range, after being picked out by Juan Mata.
CSKA almost went ahead in the 77th minute but David De Gea pulled off a superb save to deny Seydou Doumbia, before Chris Smalling popped up with a clearance off the line to deny the Ivorian once again.
United eventually broke the deadlock in the 79th minute when Lingard picked out Rooney, who powered home a header from close range.
Van Gaal's charges managed to see out the remaining 10 minutes to clinch their second victory of the campaign.
The win also sees United end a three-game winless and scoring run in all competitions.
