Chelsea Thump Tel Aviv

UEFA Champions League

Result: Chelsea 4-0 Maccabi Tel Aviv

Date: 16 September 2015

Venue: Stamford Bridge

Chelsea began their Champions League campaign with a 4-0 thumping of Maccabi Tel Aviv at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening.

Jose Mourinho dropped the likes of ohn Terry, Branislav Ivanovic, Nemanja Matic and Diego Costa to the bench, while Abdul Baba Rahman was handed his Chelsea debut.

The Blues squandered a chance to take the lead in the sixth minute, after Willian was brought down in the box, however Eden Hazard ballooned his spot-kick into the stands.

The host did manage to break the deadlock in the 15th minute when Willian's free-kick from 35-yards out sailed over everyone and into the far corner.

Jose Mourinho was then dealt a blow in the 23rd minute when Willian, who had been one of the better performers, had to replaced due to an injury.

The home side then doubled their lead just before the halftime break via the penalty spot, however it was Oscar who stepped up to convert the spot-kick.

After a quiet start to the second half, Chelsea eventually added a third in the 58th minute when Cesc Fabregas picked out Diego Costa, who volleyed the ball into the top corner.

Chances were hard to come by for the visitors throughout the game, although Zahavi went close with a  curling effort from distance in the 64th minute.

Mourinho's men continued to search for more goals and they were rewarded in the 78th minute when Fabregas slotted home from close range, after Loic Remy's effort had been saved.

Chelsea will make the trip to Portugal to face Mourinho's former side, FC Porto, in their next Group G encounter.
