Messi endured a frustrating evening in the French capital on Tuesday but was rescued after Kylian Mbappe netted a late winner.
The Argentine superstar had a penalty saved by Los Blancos goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in the second half, the fifth miss from the spot of his Champions League career.
As a result, Messi has now drawn level with his former Barcelona teammate and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry having missed five penalties in the tournament.
Courtois revealed after the encounter that he had studied the Argentine's penalty-taking before their encounter in Paris.
"In these kinds of games you know that, as a goalkeeper, you're going to have quite a bit to do," Courtois told BT Sport.
"I'd studied Messi's penalties a lot and I tried to play with him when I was on the line. You've also got to have that little bit of luck, too."
