In so doing, he overtook Messi’s tally of 11 strikes for the current campaign to become the sole winner of the Golden Shoe.
Ronaldo has won the prestigious individual award for a fifth consecutive season, albeit sharing it with Messi and Neymar in 2014/15.
Overall, he has now lifted the award six times – more than any other player in the competition’s history.
Messi seemed destined to lift the UCL Golden Shoe this campaign after scoring 10 goals in his first five group stage games, but the Argentine only added one more in the knock out stages.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, had a relatively slow start to his UCL campaign, netting just twice during the group stages. However, 10 goals in his final five games of the Champions League season, saw him overtake his long-standing rival.
Overall, Ronaldo has now scored 105 goals in Champions League history – more than any other player.
