Angry Paris Saint-Germain Star Slams Boss For UEFA Champions League Exit
An angry Paris Saint-Germain star has slammed manager Unai Emery following the club's exit from the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.
Les Parisiens, who went down 5-2 on aggregate, lost 2-1 in the second leg of their round of 16 tie against Real Madrid after goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Casemiro killed any chance of further progression.
After the match, Julian Draxler, who started the game from the bench, hit out at his manager for being too cautious and for bringing him into the game too late, despite being asked to warm up early in the second half.
"It was insensitive," the former Schalke star told ZDF.
"I didn't know what was going on. I was surprised and angry. The goal for 1-1 went in but it did not change anything for us. I felt we needed to keep pressing and playing offensively.
"We lost a man, and even though we got it to 1-1 the whole stadium knew the game would not turn around because we didn't have the intensity on the pitch.
"Real Madrid played it out confidently and were not nervous at all."
Despite being a man down, and behind in the tie, the Germany international was given only 14 minutes to try to help turn things around.
"We played the ball back and forth but you cannot score just doing that," Draxler added.
"You have to put pressure on Real Madrid when you are 3-1 down, not just pass it back and forth and hope something falls for you.
"We needed to put pressure on the opponents right from the start. We didn't do that so we deserved to be eliminated."
The 24-year-old has made 37 appearances for PSG so far this season, scoring four goals and assisting a further nine strikes.
