8 Top African Goalscorers In UCL History

With Sadio Mane equalling Didier Drogba's UEFA Champions League record for the most knockout stage goals from an African player, here are the top goalscorers in the competition's history from the continent.

The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations' Golden Boot winner Vincent Aboubakar is a former champion of Africa and has scored goals wherever he has been.

The Cameroonian has respectable goal records in some of Europe's best leagues. From Portugal to France, as well as Turkey, the striker has found the back of the net.

The 30-year-old has a consistent goal haul in Europe's premier club competition too. Aboubakar has amassed 14 goals in 24 appearances in the Champions League for Besiktas and FC Porto.

There is another Cameroonian who has been even more prolific in the Champions League, though, with Samuel Eto'o being on the podium of goalscorers from the African continent with his 30 competition strikes.

A two-time winner with Barcelona, scoring in the 2005/06 and 2008/09 finals, Eto'o would go on to achieve success with Italian side Inter Milan as they became the only Serie A side ever to complete a treble.

Another player to have netted in a UCL final, Salah was on the scoresheet in the 2019 decider when Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the final held at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid, Spain.

Mane Equals Drogba UCL Record

Currently on 36 competition goals, the Egyptian forward has not scored in the Champions League since the Reds' round of 16 elimination of Inter Milan, but will be hoping to add to his impressive tally in the coming weeks.

Salah is only eight strikes behind the man in the top spot, and that is Drogba. Lauded for almost single-handedly winning the 2011/12 edition of the UCL for Chelsea, the Ivorian consistently demonstrated his knack for scoring in big European games and his 44 goals across his time with Chelsea, Olympique de Marseille, and Galatasaray are a testimony to that.
