We are down to less than two weeks until the start of the World Cup in Brazil and continue our Top 50 World Cup moments – today number 11: Zidane Becomes French Legend v Brazil.
In 1998 the star of the World Cup was undoubtedly the French midfielder Zinedine Zidane.
But the tournament didn’t start well for Zidane, he was sent off against Saudi Arabia, but after serving his two match suspension, he came back like a man possessed.
In the final against Brazil, Zidane secured his legend status, as he scored the first two goals in the first half of a 3-0 victory.
Both goals were headers from corners, while Emmanuel Petit scored in the final minutes of the game to wrap up the result.
Eight years later Zidane’s head-butting of Marco Materazzi in the 2006 final made him infamous once more, but it was in 1998 that Zidane’s head made the headlines for all the right reasons.
