Top 50 World Cup Moments

Uruguay Stun Brazil In Front Of 200 000

We are down to less than two weeks until the start of the World Cup in Brazil and continue our Top 50 World Cup moments – today number 12: Uruguay Stun Brazil In Front Of 200 000.

64 years ago the World Cup was also held in Brazil and the hosts reached the 1950 final against fellow South American outfit, Uruguay.

Brazil were undeniably favourites, in fact with the tournament having a very different format, all the home side needed was a draw to the lift the trophy.

It seemed like everyone in Brazil wanted to see their team lift the trophy, and a world record of an estimated 200,000 fans piled into the Maracana Stadium to watch the final.

The crowd erupted early in the second half when Friaca gave the Samba Kings the lead but in the 66th minute Juan Alberto Schiaffino equalised for Uruguay.

And then in the 89th minute, Alcides Ghiggia silenced the masses when he put the Uruguayans in the lead, and they left the ground stunned when they held out for the victory.

While Brazil have gone onto win five World Cups since 1950, losing this final at home still haunts many fans.
