We are down to less than a week until the start of the World Cup in Brazil and continue our Top 50 World Cup moments – today number 4: Mandela's Appearance At The 2010 World Cup.
While most most of the greatest memories from past World Cups happened during games, one moment that will live on forever in football history, was when Nelson Mandela made an appearance at the 2010 World Cup Final in South Africa.
While the former President of South Africa had been a key player in winning the bid to host the World Cup, by the time the even took place, Mr Mandela had retired from public life and the then 91 year old had not attended any of the festivities as he was mourning the pass of his great granddaughter..
But just before the final he appeared to chants of ‘Madiba, Madiba’ as he was driven around the field in a golf cart.
Accompanied by his wife Graca Machel, Mandela waved to the excited crowd, and was a fitting finale to the first World Cup ever to be held in Africa.
