With less than 50 days until the start of the World Cup in Brazil, Soccer Laduma takes a look at our Top 50 World Cup moments – today number 25 - 1998 Bafana’s First WC Goal.
It was Bafana Bafana’s first appearance at a World Cup finals in 1998, and things didn’t start so well as they lost 3-0 to eventual World Cup winners France in their opening game.
The second match was against Denmark, and it was in that game that South Africa’s first ever goal in a World Cup Finals was scored.
Still one of the most memorable goals of South African history, it was scored by Benni McCarthy, scoring by rolling the ball through the legs of Peter Schmeichel in a 1-1 draw with the Danes.
It was also South Africa’s first ever point at a World Cup Final.
