Top 50 World Cup Moments

Argentina’s 26-Passes To Glory

We are down to less than 20 days until the start of the World Cup in Brazil and continue our Top 50 World Cup moments – today number 14: Argentina’s 26-Passes To Glory.

Argentina looked like the team to beat at the 2006 World Cup in Germany – at least until they were knocked out by the hosts in quarter-final.

Midfield general, Juan Roman Riquelme, was the centre of Argentina’s game, with a young Lionel Messi evolving around him.

In the first group game they had beaten the Ivory Coast 2-1 and in the second game they faced Serbia and Montenegro.

Argentina’s slick movement and inventiveness throughout the tournament was best encapsulated when Esteban Cambiasso finished a 26-pass move to score the 2-0.

The final pass was a superb back-heel by Hernan Crespo, with the likes of Riquelme, Javier Mascherano and Lionel Messi also involved in the build-up play.

The game would finish with a 6-0 drubbing of Serbia, but the 26-passes and the master class in movement off the ball that led to Cambiasso’s drilled effort into the top corner were remembered by world football.

The goal went into the history books as one of the greatest team goals at a World Cup.
