Upset Bale Leaves Bench & Argues Over Penalty With Ramos
Upset Gareth Bale Leaves Real Madrid Bench & Argues Over Penalty With Sergio Ramos
Real Madrid beat Leganes 3-1 on Wednesday night, but it wasn’t all rosy as Gareth Bale was seen leaving the bench during the game before arguing over a penalty kick with Sergio Ramos later in the game.
The Welshman has cut a frustrated figure in recent weeks, after starting three of Los Blancos' last four games on the bench.
He looked particularly upset in the UEFA Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain, but again wrote the headlines on Wednesday.
Bale didn’t make Zinedine Zidane’s starting XI in the game against Leganes, and even left his spot on the bench midway through the first half.
It’s unclear why Bale, who was wearing training shoes and not his football boots at the time, left the bench, but it clearly surprised his teammates and the coaching staff.
He entered the game in the 75th minute and thought he had a chance to score when Real where awarded a late spot-kick. However, with Cristiano Ronaldo rested for the game, captain Ramos decided to overrule Bale before converting the penalty to make it 3-1.
Ramos himself, though, dismissed any rumours of a rift with Bale over the spot kick.
"Whenever Cris is not playing, if it is not Gareth it is me," he told BeIn Sports. "We alternate. There is no rivalry."
Los Blancos boss Zidane didn’t want to comment on any controversy but explained why the club-record signing started off the bench once more.
"It is a bit of everything, but I am happy with Gareth," the coach said.
"We must go bit by bit with him, so that he finds his best level. We will see the games coming up now, how we manage it. We are in a good moment, and I will count on all of them."
Bale has made 23 appearances for Real this season, scoring nine goals and assisting in another six strikes.
