Goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Aaron Ramsey guided Arsenal to a 2-0 win over AC Milan in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League round of 16 tie.
Danny Welbeck led the attack for the visitors as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was ineligible, while Alexandre Lacazette missed out through injury.
The home side got off to a promising start, with Giacomo Bonaventura going close after just three minutes at the far post.
Arsene Wenger's men carved out an opening of their own in the eighth minute but Mkhitaryan could only find the side-netting.
Mkhitaryan was not to be denied in the 14th minute, though, as the Armenian cut onto his right foot before unleashing a strike that deflected past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, 0-1.
Milan went in search of an equaliser as the likes of Suso and Hakan Calhanoglu enjoyed a lot of the ball, although they failed to carve out clear-cut chances.
Arsenal should have doubled their lead three minutes before the break but Danny Welbeck failed to slot past Donnarumma in a one-on-one situation, before Mkhitaryan rattled the woodwork moments later.
The second goal did arrive on the stroke of half-time when Mesut Ozil played in Ramsey, who skipped past Donnarumma to tap into an empty net.
Milan dominated the possession as the half went on and the Serie A giants threw numbers forward in search of an equaliser, but Wenger's charges remained resolute to claim a the victory at the San Siro.
