The home side started the brighter of the two teams inside the first 10 minutes with Heung-Min Son proving problematic for Shkodran Mustafi.
Mauricio Pochettino’s charges continued to enjoy more possession but were not penetrative enough in the last third to trouble goalkeeper Petr Cech.
Harry Kane found the opening in the 27th minute after being sent through by Christian Eriksen inside the box but he could not connect well with the ball and skied his effort over the crossbar.
Arsene Wenger’s troops were absorbing the pressure after 35 minutes and looked to capitalise on counter-attacks, with Jack Wilshere and Henrikh Mkhitaryan threatening.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got the first chance for the Gunners five minutes before halftime time with a strike inside the box following a knock-down header by Nacho Monreal, but he was unlucky to see his shot cleared off the line by defender Davinson Sanchez.
The match went into the break logged at 0-0 in a very tactical match from the London clubs.
Harry Kane broke the deadlock five minutes after halftime with a towering header past Cech following a fine cross from Ben Davies.
Eriksen nearly made it 2-0 on the hour-mark after unleashing a wonderful curling strike that forced Cech into a fine save.
Wenger made a double substitution with 25 minutes left to play as Mkhitaryan made way for Alexandre Lacazette while Mohamed Elneny came out for Alex Iwobi.
Dele Alli almost doubled the lead 15 minutes before time after being released by Eriksen to go one-on-one with the on-rushing Cech but he could not find the target.
The Gunners almost snatched an equaliser in the final minutes of second-half stoppage time but Lacazette sent his low strike wide of the target as Spurs held on for the win.
