Fredericks: The Shield Sbonis'iDiski Campaign Is Back & Bigger!

Following new, exciting partnerships with LaLiga and Manchester City, former Kaizer Chiefs star Stanton Fredericks reveals what the Shield Sbonis’iDiski campaign has to offer for aspiring footballers, coaches and fans in South Africa.

Now in its third year, the Sbonis’iDiski football development programme is back and even bigger.

While Shield's national scouting programme is undoubtedly the main attraction of the campaign for young football talents, former Bafana Bafana and Chiefs winger Fredericks has highlighted the importance of upskilling grassroots coaches and how the Shield Sbonis'iDiski campaign aims to do just that.

"I'm a big believer in this campaign and if we are going to impact the grassroots football, we need to coach the coaches," he told Soccer Laduma.

"We need to support the coaches who are in the rural areas and are coaching the guys. You are only as good as your coach as a player. If a coach tells you to do something the correct way, he sets you up and gives you a better chance at being a professional footballer.

"But if a guy doesn't know what he is doing... yes, he might have the passion; yes, he might be training the guys too. But if he doesn't know how to defend, how your body shape should be, your first touch – all that time spent is not wasted, but it can be dealt with more fruitfully."

Fredericks also explained that the programme has expanded from five to 10 regions this year, and as a result, will reach more provinces, namely Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Eastern Cape, Johannesburg, Kwa-Zulu Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, North West and Pretoria.

From March to June 2019, scouting is set to take place across South Africa, with the top 25 players being afforded the opportunity to travel to Pretoria for trials in July to become the finalists of year three of the Sbonis'iDiski campaign.

The selected three players will travel to Chelsea's Cobham training ground under the supervision of the Blues' coaching staff, where they will compete for the crown of the 2019 Shield Ultimate Player, who will be handed a one-year contract with Pirates' MultiChoice Diski Challenge team.

The latest instalment of the campaign will also see 25 grassroots tacticians across the country participating in coaching clinics led by Chelsea and Orlando Pirates coaches.

When asked about Chelsea's involvement in this year's campaign, the former Amakhosi star suggested that the Premier League giants would be actively transferring their vast knowledge of the game to aspiring coaches and footballers in South Africa.

"I know the winners of the campaign will be training with Chelsea, but to also have a brand of Manchester City's magnitude involved is massive," he added.

"More importantly, something we discussed at the round table with experts from South Africa, Orlando Pirates and Chelsea was coaching the coaches, and I think there is a big opportunity there."
