Result: Arsenal 2-1 Chelsea
Date: 27 May 2017
Venue: Wembley Stadium
Arsenal were crowned FA Cup champions for the third time in the last four seasons, after they defeated Chelsea 2-1 in the final on Saturday evening.
The Gunners started off sharply and were rewarded after Alexis Sanchez’ controversial goal put the Gunners 1 -0 ahead after just five minutes.
Arsenal saw more of the possession and they were creating the better chances as Danny Welbeck came close to doubling his side’s lead when his header hit the post.
Chelsea were a shadow of their fluent play as they struggled to create chances but their star forward Diego Costa forced a great save from David Ospina and the keeper temporarily injured himself in the process.
It was all Arsenal in the first half but a number of goal-line clearances from the Chelsea defence kept the score at 1-0 going into the break.
The second half saw both teams going at each other as they produced end to end action but with no goals. Hector Bellerin came close on the hour mark as his overlapping run got him into space behind the Chelsea defence but a good save from Courtois kept out the wing-backs effort.
Chelsea went a man down after Victor Moses was shown a second yellow in the second half. That seemed to have spurred Conte’s men on as they found an equaliser through a Diego Costa low volley to level the scores at 1 – 1.
Arsenal regained their lead almost immediately after a Giroud cross found Aaron Ramsey who headed home into an empty net.
End to end stuff saw both sides creating and missing opportunities to score but Arsenal managed to hold on to claim the victory that makes them 2017 FA Cup champions.
