Bucs Coach: Some Youngsters Look Like They Got Enough Talent For Pirates

Next week former Bafana Bafana captain Siphiwe Mkhonza and his coaching team will be joined by Chelsea coaches to select the talented youngster, who will get a professional contract with the Buccaneers.

The Sbonis’ iDiski campaign is entering its final phase, with 25 talented South African footballers chasing their dream of gaining a professional contract with Bucs.

Over 500 were scouted in Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Pretoria, Durban and Johannesburg, and the best five from each region were invited to the final trials, which will take place between 1 and 3 August at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria.

The three campaign winners will be invited to train at Premier League giants’ training centre and meet some of the players. In addition, the player
who “wants
it the most” will also gain a pro contract with the Buccaneers.

“Once we have given them the platform to showcase themselves in an environment that is closer to what their real training week would resemble, it will come down to which of them wants it the most,” said Nkosinathi Masika, Pirates coach, who is involved in the campaign.

“There are a lot of talented footballers in this group, but talent alone means very little when you are missing other traits, which are critical to becoming a professional footballer.

“Like I have said, this group has talent.

“It’s not very easy to make it at Pirates, let alone join the first team. It comes with a lot of work being put into honing your craft and wanting to be better than your current ability.

“These players are coming from different levels, some without formal training, and to make as big a call as to say they are ready at this stage would be premature. There are definitely some players who look like they have the right stuff to take the first steps though. But it’s still a long way to go.”
