Inter Milan jumped up to second spot after a brace from Romelu Lukaku inspired the side to a 3-0 win over Genoa on Saturday night.
Lautaro Martinez, Victor Moses and Marcelo Brozovic were among the six changes for Inter, who drew a blank against Fiorentina this week.
It took a while for Antonio Conte's charges to get into their groove as the likes of Lukaku and Martinez were thwarted in the opening 15 minutes.
Lukaku was in the thick of things again on 30 minutes as he did well to hold up play before teeing up Christian Eriksen, who fired over the crossbar from close-range.
It was no surprise to see Lukaku get the opening goal four minutes later by nodding home Cristiano Biraghi's teasing cross for his 22nd league goal of the season.
Genoa did go close to pulling a goal back on the stroke of halftime, but his curling effort from distance sailed inches wide of the upright.
With the tempo dropping in the second half, both coaches opted for a change after the hour mark, as Genoa introduce Lasse Schone while Conte threw on Borja Valero, Alexis Sanchez and Danilo D'Ambrosio.
The hosts looked to get themselves back in the contest but were often let down by their decision-making in the final third.
However, it was Inter who got the all-important second goal with eight minutes left through Sanchez, who turned home Moses' cross with a first-time finish to seal the win.
There was enough time for Lukaku to complete his brace as the Belgian forward slotted home from close range after some good work by Brozovic to send Inter second on the table, six points behind league leaders Juventus.
