The Brazil international was sent off after he was caught, via the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, spitting at the Sassuolo forward.
Costa apologised via Instagram shortly after the match, but the winger has now received a four-game ban for the incident, which the club will not appeal, according to coach Massimiliano Allegri.
"Douglas Costa surprised us, but he will prove that it was an isolated incident," Allegri told reporters at a press conference.
"He lost it for a moment, which can happen, and he asked for forgiveness.
"He will serve four games and we will not appeal. It was a very unpleasant gesture, which surprised everyone, a very out of character gesture.
"(Today), I'll decide if he's going to be on the bench or if he's in the team. I'm sorry because it was not the kind of behaviour to show children, but he's the most disappointed with his attitude."
