Giacomo Bonaventura gave the home side the lead in the 20th minute with a powerful effort from close range, before Giampaolo Pazzini netted a stoppage time penalty to secure all three points for Milan.

AS Roma lost ground league leaders Juventus, after being held to a 1-1 draw with Hellas Verona at the Stadio Marc'Antonio.

The ever-green Francesco Totti gave Roma the lead in the 26th minute with a fine low effort from 25-yards out, however an own-goal from Seydou Keita meant Roma left Verona with only a point.

Lazio have strengthened their hopes of finishing in the top four, after they defeated Palermo 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Palermo went ahead in the 26th minute courtesy of a curling effort from Paulo Dybala, after Lazio had lost possession in the middle of the park.

However, goals from Stefano Mauri and Antonio Candreva ensured they claimed all three points, while Palermo had  Edgar Barreto sent off in stoppage time.

Empoli moved further away from the relegation zone, after seeing off Chievo 3-0 courtesy of a brace from Riccardo Meggiorini  and a solitary strike from Daniele Rugani.

In the final game of the night, Mohammed Salah's goal was cancelled out by Giuseppe Vives, as Fiorentina and Torino played out to a 1-1 draw.
