Result: Real Madrid 0-2 Real Betis
Date: 19 May 2019
Venue: Santiago Bernabeu
Real Madrid ended the season on a disappointing note with a 2-0 defeat to Real Betis at Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.
Betis had the better of the opening exchanges, but their final ball was letting them down.
The visitors won a free-kick in a promising position in the 17th minute after Nacho fouled William Carvalho. Captain Andres Guardado whipped the delivery in to the box but Giovani Lo Celso could only direct his header straight at Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
Marcelo came close in the 25th minute. Vinicius opted to cut the ball back to the Brazilian left-back on the edge of the box, who let fly with a fierce left-footed strike, which fizzed just wide of the left-hand upright.
In the 27th minute, Marc Bartra caught Navas by surprise with a long-range shot as the Costa Rican had to scramble to tip the ball over his post.
Karim Benzema hit the post in the 33rd minute. Raphael Varane squared the ball in to the box with Francis Guerrero miscuing his attempted clearance straight to the French striker, who only had the keeper to beat, but his effort rebounded back of the right-hand post.
Soon after, Junior Firpo played a wonderful through-ball to get Lo Celso in behind the Madrid defence, with the Argentine taking a brilliant first-touch on his thigh before attempting to lob Navas, who did well to back-pedal quickly and divert the ball over his bar.
Firpo then had a free header when he was left unmarked in the Madrid box from a curling Guardado free-kick, but the Spanish under-21 international could only head over the bar from a promising position.
Los Blancos started the second half with more urgency and Vinicius came close in the 57th minute. Marcelo played a lovely ball over the top for his Brazilian compatriot, with the young winger turning Aissa Mandi inside out before being denied by Betis goalkeeper Pau Lopez from a tight angle.
Soon after, Betis broke the deadlock. Lo Celso played an excellent ball over the top down the left-hand side for Guardado, who squared the ball in to the box for Loren Moron, with the frontman side-footing the ball in to the roof of the net.
Vinicius was getting plenty of joy down the left-hand side for the hosts, but his final decision and execution in the final third was letting him down.
In the 68th minute, William Carvalho and Guardado combined well to work the ball upfield before the ball was cut back on the edge of the box to Lo Celso, who brought a good, diving save out of Navas with a sweetly-struck left-footed effort.
Carvalho then played a slide-rule pass for Lo Celso, who was in behind the Madrid defence, but slightly rushed his effort, curling the ball well wide of the right-hand upright.
Quique Setien's side were toying with their more-fancied opponents and doubled their lead in the 75th minute. Lo Celso's through ball released Firpo, who got to the byline on the left-hand side and squared the ball back to Jese, with the former Madrid frontman tapping home from close range.
The visitors kept the ball with to ease to run down the clock and emerge comfortable winners in the end.
