UEFA Champions League
Result: Bayern Munich 1-3 Liverpool (Liverpool won 3-1 on agg.)
Date: 13 March 2019
Venue: Allianz Arena
Liverpool became the fourth English side to advance to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after they defeated Bayern Munich 3-1 in the second leg of their round of 16 tie.
Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum return to the Reds midfield, while Fabinho and Adam Lallana dropped to the bench following Saturday's win over Burnley.
Twelve minutes into the game, Jurgen Klopp was forced into a re-shuffle as Henderson failed to recover from an earlier knock and was replaced by Fabhino.
While Bayern dominated the opening exchanges, it was Liverpool who broke the deadlock on 25 minutes as Sadio Mane latched onto Virgil van Dijk's long pass, before turning Manuel Neuer to send a delicate chip into an empty.
The Bavarians, however, did not panic as they eventually levelled matters on the night six minutes before the break when Liverpool's Joel Matip deflected Serge Gnabry's cross into his own net.
The Reds took control in the second half as Mohamed Salah, who had a quiet first stanza, forced Neuer into a good save inside the opening 10 minutes.
Lverpool's persistence eventually paid off in the 68th minute as Virgl van Dijk rose well to send a fine header into the bottom corner to put his side ahead on the night and in the tie.
Bayern pushed for a way back into the encounter, but any hopes of a comeback were dashed with six minutes remaining as Salah's cross found Mane, who nodded at the far post to seal the win and a spot in the quarter-finals.
The Reds now join fellow Premier League sides Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham Hostpur in the next round.
