FC Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez recently announced that he will be leaving the club, and explained why he turned down a contract extension.
The retired Spain international revealed that he turned down the chance to extend his contract with the Catalan club, saying it’s now time for him to move on, and take on a new challenge.
“It was the right time to go,” he told AS.
“Sometimes you think about these things; you think that maybe you're making a mistake that you could carry on.
“But the decision had already been made.
“Barcelona offered me an extension and I considered it, but on balance I was persuaded by this adventure.”
The midfield maestro is set to feature in last game at the Camp Nou at the weekend, after making his first-team debut 17-years-ago.
The 35-year-old has played 739 times for Barcelona to date, scoring 84 goals, while he’s assisted a further 163 times.
Xavi has won the La Liga eight times, the Copa del Rey twice, and the UEFA Champions League three times. However, he could be in line for a third Copa del Rey and a fourth Champions League title, with Barca in the final of both competitions.
