Argentine football legend, Diego Maradona, believes Cristiano Ronaldo deserves the FIFA Ballon D’Or more than his compatriot Lionel Messi this year.
The former Argentina forward has backed his countryman over the past few years, but feels Messi’s injury problems this season have shifted the edge to Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo.
“Cristiano Ronaldo should win. Messi has been injured a lot this year” he told Algerian newspaper Le Buteur.
Messi missed six league games at the end of last season and was also not 100 percent fit when Barcelona lost 4-0 to Bayern in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final. Subsequently he did not feature in the return leg.
He also had a slight injury in August and another one in October this season, before being side-lined with his recent hamstring injury until the New Year.
Maradona, who coached Messi and Argentina during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, played four World Cup tournaments himself and led his country to victory in 1986. His biggest personal accolade was being named joint FIFA Player of the 20th Century with Pele.
