A former Manchester United flop has leapt to the defence of five-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi after Argentina suffered their first loss in a Copa America opening clash in 40 years at the hands of Colombia on Sunday.
Los Cafeteros skipper Radamel Falcao has since commented on Messi's struggles with his national team, saying that his quality makes him the subject of unfair criticism with his national team.
"If Messi scores a goal, people ask for two. If he scores a free-kick, they'll say the wall wasn't set up properly. If Argentina lose, it will be talked about like it was his fault.
"That's the price you pay for being the best player in the world."
The Colombia captain was also asked about being considered favourites for the tournament after defeating the record Copa champions, Argentina.
"We can't think that we are favourites after beating Messi's Argentina," he answered.
"A lot is missing. We are just starting and anything can happen. If you fall asleep here, you will lose."
