The 41-year-old was unveiled as the Catalan club's new boss at the Camp Nou on Monday before fielding questions from journalists.
At his first press conference as Barcelona manager, Xavi was asked if he had been in contact with Messi, who left the Blaugrana in August as a free agent after it became apparent the club could not afford to offer him a new contract.
Xavi, focused and determined to start off well in his new role, revealed that he had received a text message from his former colleague, but insisted that the club and fans cannot be thinking about players from the team's past.
"Leo Messi texted me to wish the best of luck," he said, according to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
"He's incredible but he's not here as Eto'o or Ronaldinho… we've to think about the future, not about players who're no longer here at Barca."
