Lionel Messi has been voted as one of FC Barcelona’s four captains, along with Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets, this season.
The Catalan giants announced the new order on Friday after Luis Enrique’s squad had voted their four captains for the 2014/15 season.
Xavi, who had been second in command, has replaced Andres Puyol as the club’s new first captain, while Iniesta, Messi and Busquets (in this order) are his replacements.
Messi and Busquets are both newcomers to the role after Puyol and Victor Valdes, the first and third captains respectively, left the team at the end of last season.
However, both have worn the captain’s armband for Barcelona in the past, so neither of them are entirely unfamiliar with the responsibility.
Meanwhile, Enrique has called Messi after just three days of training into the squad for the club’s friendly against Finnish side HJK Helsinki on Saturday.
Javier Mascherano and Dani Alves have also been named into the squad, while Neymar will remain in Barcelona to continue his recovery work following the back injury he picked up at the World Cup.
The Blaugrana have so far won one, drawn one and lost one of their pre-season games and the new Barcelona boss will be eager to beat the Finish side.
