Reports last week suggested that the 34-year-old would resume first-team training at the Catalan giants on 2 August, but it is looking increasingly unlikely that will be his return date.
Despite his contract issue not yet being sorted, Messi was tipped to return in time for Barcelona's pre-season friendly match against Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus in the Joan Gamper Trophy next week Tuesday.
According to Mundo Deportivo, however, the six-time Ballon d'Or winner appears set to stay away from training until his new deal has been finalised, as per Joan Laporta's instructions.
It has been widely reported that the club captain, whose previous contract in Spain expired in June, cannot sign a new deal, despite reaching an agreement with president Laporta, due to the club's financial issues.
The Blaugrana are believed to be looking to sell a number of players in order to be able to register new signings Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay and Emerson, and confirm a new contract for Messi, per LaLiga's new salary limits.
Messi & Ronaldo To Meet Next Month?
These delays and new developments could lead to the 2021 Copa America winner missing the start of their 2021/22 campaign, which begins on 15 August with a home LaLiga match against Real Sociedad.
